
The Department of Education - Division of Cebu Province recently awarded a plaque of appreciation to leading wireless services provider Smart Communications Inc.(SMART) during Cebu's Education Week Celebration.
SMART was recognized for its efforts and support to the students and teachers of the province which "significantly contributed to the successful implementation of programs and projects directed toward the attainment of Quality Basic Education" in Cebu. In particular, Smart was commended for its Smart Schools Program, its flagship community service initiative that promotes Information and Communications Technology in basic education.
Under the program, public high schools are provided with one-year free Internet access through the PLDT group's wide range of communications solutions, online content through its program website (www.smartschools.ph), and training on basic computer use for teachers. It is implemented through the Philippine Business for Social Progress, with the support of the Department of Education, Learn.ph and Microsoft's Partners in Learning Program.
To date, Smart has nine Smart Schools partner schools in Cebu province. These include, pilot school partner Science and Education Technology Center in Lapu-Lapu City, mountain barangay schools Paril and Lusaran National High School, island schools Puertobello National High School in Camotes Island and Doong National High School in Bantayan, Abellana National High School in Cebu City, Catmon National High School, Minglanilla National Science High School and Medellin National Science and Technology School.
Cebu-based Smart employees have also been active in supporting the Department's Adopt-a-School Program through summer reading tutorials in Buagsong Elementary School in Barangay Buagsong, Cordova.
